Hickory. Hand tools. No hardware.
Using Jennie Alexander’s book, Make A Chair From A Tree, and while quarantined in north-eastern New Jersey, I foraged the materials for this chair within walking distance of our cabin. Using only hand-tools, I shaped all the parts and wove the seat from one small hickory tree. Assembly was a patient process of coordinating moisture levels to take advantage of green wood’s shrinkage around dried parts to make extremely strong joints.
